Coil Pack or Individual Coils (Distributorless Ignitions) If you have a modern vehicle with "coil pack" or "individual ignition coils" distributorless igntion you will need a tach driver like the MSD 8913 to drive the tachometer. Connect the signal from the tach driver to SIG 1 (In-Dash Tach) or purple wire (Pedestal Mount Tach) input.

Dec 27, 2012 · The main reason 12V won’t be present at coil + is because your MSD ignition is a Capacitive Discharge Ignition. Like all CD ignitions they use a large capacitor to discharge 420-480 Volts to coil + and coil – will normally be connected to ground.

The original VR6 coil packs are expensive and weak in output. -not the most compelling justification for sticking with them. Put MSD's powerful "Blaster" Coil to work to attain multiple benefits. Those include increased fuel efficiency, sharper throttle response -especially under heavy boost, cleaner idle, faster rev response (both rising and ...

Older-model cars used the 12-volt ignition coils to provide power to the spark plugs. These coils had very simple wiring. They usually required only three wires: the spark plug wire, the power wire and the ignition switch wire. Ignition coils of this type are usually a little larger than a soda can and are heavy ...

How to Test 12 Volt Ignition Coils. An automobile ignition coil acts as a transformer, having a primary and secondary bundle of wires that create and send an electrical charge to the spark plugs, causing them to fire. While ignition coils will generally last for the life of a vehicle, faulty spark plugs or spark plug wires can send irregular voltage surges through the ignition coil, causing the coil to burn out.

If you run a 6 volt coil on 12 volts it will burn out, not right away, but eventually it will go away. The reason that Mallory runs a ballast resistor is because they run a 6 volt coil and their box is/was designed to run with 6 volt signal from the coil. I say was because their new systems are designed for 12 volt coils.

This wire is responsible for turning the MSD On and Off. Connects to a switched 12 volt source such as the ignition key or switch. (Max current draw of .250 mA.) This wire connects to the coil positive (+) terminal. This is the ONLY wire that makes electrical contact with the positive coil terminal. This wire connects to the coil negative ...

Mar 28, 2013 · Every Ignition Has Two Sides. MSD summed up for us on their educational site what is exactly happening within the ignition process: A typical (meaning stock) 12-volt automotive ignition system operates by taking in a low voltage with high current from the car’s battery and changing it into a higher voltage with lower current to jump the spark plug gap to propagate combustion in the cylinder.

When wiring a msd 6al to a classic mustang, can you use the existing factory ignition wire that was to the positive side of the coil?, is this wire a resistor wire? Or do you have to run a new small red 12 volt wire directly to the ignition switch? Did the factory wiring to the coil drop the...

If the voltage measured is approximately 12 volts, no resistance wire is present. A typical resistance wire will provide 9 - 6 volts. The next step is to determine the resistance in the primary ignition. Label the wires attached to the coil terminals and note their appropriate location.
